Xolo Maridueña, star of Blue Beetle, and Cobra Kai is the on-camera presenter of this original documentary film that features the real life success stories of eleven kids. Most grew up in poverty, were often hungry and some were neglected. Six of them worked full-time as child farm workers. The painful hardships they suffered were exacerbated by society’s cruel indifference to what they were going through in plain view of the community. They were relentlessly reminded, “You will never go to a good college or make it in a white-collar job.”
Yet, today they are engineers, physicians, medical research scientists and individuals elected to the U.S. Congress and California State Assembly and Senate. Their impressive accomplishments include authoring hundreds of scientific research papers published in The New England Journal of Medicine; contributing to the engineering of pivotal Apple products and teaching medicine at the Stanford School of Medicine and the UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program.
Such achievements showcase what the children of migrant farmworkers are capable of. Their personal and professional success is irrefutable evidence that every child has been endowed with the same limitless human potential, no matter their circumstances or backgrounds, and pays tribute to the workings of the indelible human spirit. Their success serves to open the eyes of audience members, enabling them to see how they too have what it takes to make their own lives and communities better. These stories are destined to replace society’s stale, cartoonish immigrant bashing myths and stereotypes. A breath of fresh air for all.
